Ways To Reduce Your Risk Of Oral Cancer

Ways to reduce your risk of oral cancer. Oral Cancer, mouth cancer, or cancer of the oral cavity will affect about 53,000 people in the US alone, in 2019. This kind of cancer is more common in men than it is in women and it is estimated that upwards of 10,860 will die of oral cancer in the US.

Cancer of the oral cavity belongs to a group of cancers referred to as head and neck cancers and are often treated similarly. Mouth cancers can present themselves in many ways including on the lips, tongue, gums, the lining of the cheeks, the roof of the mouth, or floor of the mouth under the tongue.

Be alert if you happen to spot a sore that refuses to heal on your lip, loose teeth, pain in the mouth or ear, difficulty swallowing or a lump inside of your mouth. These symptoms might be attributed to something more serious.

Like with any ailment, there measures you can take to lower your odds of being affected. Keep reading below to learn more about ways to reduce your risk of oral cancer.

Avoid The Use Of Tobacco Products

Chewing, smoking or snuffing tobacco is one of the most common ways to develop oral cancer. It may be easier said than done, but if you are currently someone who is dependent upon the substance, it would be in your best interest to stop immediately.

If you have never used tobacco in your life and decide to give it a try socially, DON’T! Avoiding tobacco products in their entirety is the best way to lower your risk of developing this kind of cancer.

Protect Your Lips Against Too Much Sun Exposure

This is a prevention technique that does not usually come to mind for most but one of the simplest ways to prevent oral cancer is by limiting your lip’s exposure to the sun. At this point in time, we know that too much sun exposure can lead to certain kinds of skin cancer, and the same logic applies to your lips.

If you are in the sun, wearing a chapstick with SPF is a great idea. Other ways to protect your lips from the sun are staying in the shade and wearing wide brim hats whenever possible.

Drink Alcoholic Beverages In Moderation

Having a drink after a long and stressful day is a coping mechanism for a lot of people, but if you are considering indulging in an alcoholic beverage, be sure to do so in moderation. Overindulging in alcoholic beverages can put you at risk of developing oral cancer. This happens because too much alcohol consumption can irritate the cells in your mouth making them vulnerable to developing the disease.

It’ recommended that women keep their alcohol intake to about a drink a day and men 65 years old or younger, about two drinks a day.
